Who can sponsor a family member in Canada?

To sponsor a family member, you must:

Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
Be at least 18 years old
Live in Canada (for permanent residents)
Be able to financially support the sponsored person

Who can be sponsored?

Spouse or common-law partner

Spousal sponsorship is the most common. You can sponsor your husband/wife or common-law partner.

Dependent children

Children under 22, single and without children of their own.

Parents and grandparents

The government opens a limited number of spots each year for parent and grandparent sponsorship through a lottery draw.

Other family members

In very limited cases: orphaned siblings under 18, orphaned nieces/nephews.

Financial conditions

The sponsor must demonstrate sufficient income to support the sponsored person for 3 years (spouse) or 20 years (parents/grandparents).

Processing timelines (2026)

Spouse in Canada: 12 months
Spouse abroad: 12 to 24 months
Parents/grandparents: 24 to 36 months

Work permit while waiting

Your spouse can apply for an open work permit during the processing of the sponsorship application.

Appeal in case of refusal

If the sponsorship application is refused, you have 30 days to appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD). A lawyer significantly increases the chances of success.
